Artist Statement The aerial “geometry” of the land as seen whilst flying over the Great Plains of the Midwest in a small aircraft is embedded in my memory growing up on the plains: rolling hills with linear elements of agriculture, dotted by farms. Since moving from the area I think a great deal about the …Read More…
Vintage Meets Modern
Using vintage hand-pieced and basted Dresden plates rescued from an auction site, I constructed a scrappy modern quilt that combines old and new. I like to think that the maker of these Dresden plates would approve. Save

Based on the traditional quilt pattern, “Trip Around The World”, this quilt shifts the central point to create a modern, asymmetrical version. Save Save

Intro to Improv
An improvisational piecing workshop utilizing three shades of gray to create unique borders and negative space around the main pieced “unit”, which is comprised of a graphic print and solids. A 6 hour workshop.
Curvy Improv: Nests, Vessels, and Lines
This workshop is about acquiring skills for free-cutting with a rotary cutter. Students will learn several methods of free-cuttting: free-form lines, convex and concave curves, and learn how to piece them. Students will create a variety of pieced units that may be used in one or more projects. Student should be confident using a rotary cutter.
Move Over, Mondrian
An Improvisational Piecing workshop that modernizes the idea of a “Log Cabin” quilt. Using large 10-12 inch squares the student will piece 1.5 and 3.5 inch strips of solid color or neutrals around each square, inserting prints and alternate colors into the strips to create a large “unit” of 9 pieced blocks. This is the basis for a quilt top with a large negative space, a throw quilt, or even a baby quilt. It all depends on what the student wants it to be! Workshop will include time for discussion on adding the borders/negative space outside class.
Random Acts of Stripping
In this half or full day workshop students will learn how to free-cut and piece strips of fabric into unique “sections” and then piece them together into a quilt. Pieced sections may also be embedded into a large negative space to create a abstract yet modern quilt. Class time will be used to learn this fun method of piecing. Full day class may allow students enough time to piece a small quilt top. We will use a portion of the time to discuss the various ways these pieced sections can be used in a quilt.
Sheer Bliss: A Comfort Stitch-In
Come release your inner ya-ya in this workshop! We will be working with a variety of sheers to create a surface worth stitching. Sheers will be pre-fused so students can spend the workshop designing, fusing, and stitching their sheers onto a muslin substrate. Students will use embroidery thread to create linear Kantha-style stitchery. The result will be a lovely textile piece that can be used in a wide variety of projects!
